Self-Drive Tips

Make Your Way to Us With Ease

Use a 4x4 Vehicle

Gravel roads are sandy and can be rough; a 4x4 is essential for safe and comfortable travel.

Drive Slowly and Steadily

Roads are often corrugated and sandy—keep speeds moderate (around 40-50 km/h) to avoid vehicle damage and maintain control.

Check Fuel and Supplies

Fuel stations are limited; fill up at fuel stations within the park and carry extra water and snacks.

Plan Your Route

Distances can be long, allow plenty of time between lodges and check gate opening and closing times to avoid being locked in or out.

Be Wildlife Aware

Animals roam freely, drive cautiously especially at dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active.

Follow Park Rules

Stick to designated roads, don’t litter and keep noise to a minimum to protect the environment.

Carry a Map and GPS

Polentswa Lodge: A 4×4 vehicle is required due to sandy roads and remote location.
Please note: most roads within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park beyond the main routes require a 4×4.

Gate times may vary slightly depending on the season, so it’s always best to confirm with park authorities or your lodge closer to your arrival date.

Fuel is available at Twee Rivieren, Nossob, and Mata Mata. Supplies are limited in the park, so it is advisable to stock up on essentials before entering, especially if heading to Polentswa, which is more remote.
